When it comes to teen drivers, the top two questions we receive are: first, how can we save money, and second, are there any programs available for my kids?
If you have these questions or know someone who does, keep reading.
The cost of adding a teenage driver to an insurance policy is often surprising. However, this cost is small compared to the potential expenses of a teen driver getting a speeding ticket or being involved in an accident.
Let’s start with safety. Ensuring that kids understand all the functions of their vehicle and how they work is a great place to begin.
I remember my mother telling me not to listen to the radio until I was proficient at driving. She wanted me to focus solely on driving. It took about one block for me to think I was a good driver, and then I was eager to find my favorite radio stations.
Teach your children how to set their radio stations before they leave the house, rather than trying to do it while driving. Trust me, it’s much safer.
Make sure they understand that automatic headlights do not necessarily mean automatic taillights. Have you ever seen someone driving with no taillights on while it’s getting dark? You don’t want your child to be in a situation where they risk getting rear-ended by another driver.
With winter weather approaching, it’s common to see drivers with fogged-up windows. Remind your teen not to use the air recycle switch when it’s cold outside. This switch is meant to cool the vehicle in summer or block out smells, but using it in cold weather can quickly fog up the windows, making visibility difficult.

Remember, the best way to lower rates is to help your kids remain accident-free. Be a role model: “Do as I say, not as I do” doesn’t work when it comes to driving. Your teen learns a lot from watching you, so practice safe driving yourself.
